book 5

Everyday
by David Levithan

Discussion Leader: Sheila Almarie G. Daguman

1. If you were Rhiannon, would you also fall in love with A? Why?

=> If I were Rhiannon, I would love A because for me, love sees no boundaries. I don't care if A is a spirit and he transfers from one place to another because I love him. For me, love is love. When you love, you will love that entire person even his weaknesses and will accept that he is him and he will not change because you want him to be different. We should accept them as they accept themselves. It doesn't lessen my love for him just because he is a spirit. I love him for him; the inside of him and the physical features does not matter to me.

2. In the story, Nathan claimed that he was possessed by a devil and he is referring to A. In your opinion, is A a devil or not and why.

=> For me, A is not a devil for he did not destroy anybody's life. He just borrows a day so he can live. He did not want to possess other people's body and he cannot control his situation. He also mentioned that he is not the devil and people just accuse the devil whenever there is a bad thing that is happening. He is also not an angel or a fallen angel that was sent by God to have a mission. He is just a spirit that wants to be normal that wants to be alive.

3. If you have a life like A, would you pursue your love for somebody despite of the circumstances?

=> If I were A, I would also love someone even though I'm a spirit. For me, not being a person cannot stop me from loving someone. It doesn't mean that I'm a spirit, I'm not capable of loving someone and I should not love other people. It is okay if animals are together even they don't know what love is, then why can't I love? Love is something that I never thought I could love someone and I will never have any regrets even when I suffer. I will love that someone but I will not pursue my love because I know it is impossible.

4. In our society nowadays, is it possible that somebody like A is existing? Support your answer.

=> I really don't know what to answer in this question because this question is the same as asking if I believe in supernatural beings. Maybe there are and maybe none. If they exists or not, nobody knows.

5. Discuss the views of A and Rhiannon about love.

=> A - For A, he loves and sees no boundaries. He sees no gender when he loves. The status is not important as long as he loves that person. For me, he is a martyr for he is willing to sacrifice. He gives everything when he falls in love.

Rhiannon - She loves the outside before the inside. She sees more the physical features than the inside of that person. It is not love but only affection. She wants A to be the person that he is not.

Passage Picker: Angel May S. Bagaforo

1.      “I wake up thinking of yesterday. The joy is in remembering; the pain is in knowing that it was yesterday.”(Day 5995, Page 14)

-          A said these lines after the day he possessed Justin. This is one of those days which he prayed that he can stay on Justin’s body so he can be with Rhiannon again. He possessed the body of Leslie Long that day that he wanted to possess Justin again. He is thinking of the memory he had with Rhiannon, and he feels pain it because he knows it is now in the in the past. He wants to go back to that day because it brought so much happiness, but he cannot for it is now in the past and he can do nothing to it

-          There are memories that, when we remember, make us happy but also make us sad because we know it happened on the past. It makes us happy because that particular event happened in our lives, especially when we did not expect it to happen. The thing is it is now on the past. We cannot go back to that same event again or never will it happen again. There might be events that can happen again, but the feeling when it first occurred is not the same. We sometimes wish that may that moment can last longer or forever, but it can’t.

2.      “In my experience, desire is desire, love is love. I have never fallen in love with a gender. I have fallen for individuals. (Day 6006, Page 47)

-          This was said by A when he was in the body of Hugo. Hugo has a boyfriend named Austin, and that day, they went to a homosexual and lesbian parade. At that time, he is bothered because of Nathan that he cannot concentrate on what is happening. He also thinks of Rhiannon. Austin notices that he is not okay that he thought Hugo will going to end their relationship by this, A realizes what he has done.

-          For A, in loving someone, gender is not important. When he loves that person, gender is not a considered. For him, love is genderless. He is a boy but he doesn’t care of the gender when he loves. He has once fall in love with a boy, Brennan, but their relationship did not continued for he can’t explain about his true identity. For him all people love the same, regardless of their gender.

3.      “Don’t look at the package. Look at what’s inside.” (Day 6025, page 88)

-          This was said by A to Rhiannon when he was on the body of Finn. He was a big fellow that Rhiannon does not like to see A on that body. A said this because he knows that the appearance is important to Rhiannon but she should also see beyond the body.

-          We should not look only to what we see, but also to its inside. What does it really means. Its deeper significance. We should not only judge a person base on what we see on him or her, we should also look at the inside. We are sometimes blinded on what we see physically that we cannot see who the person really is. Also in life, whenever there are difficulties; we should not just complain and be angry to God, but we should also understand His purpose why He made such things.

4.      “I wanted love to conquer all. But love can’t conquer anything. It can’t do anything on its own. It relies on us to do the conquering on its behalf.” (Day 6026, Page 91)

-          This was said by A after Rhiannon apologizes to him because she can’t hold on to their relationship. She said she is not the kind of girl that sees more than the physical appearance. She cannot always see A, for what she looks to the outside before the inside. Sometimes, shedoes not even look at the inside. A was in pain at that time that he wishes may Rhiannon see the real him.

-          A wants love to conquer all, especially the fear of Rhiannon towards love. He wants Rhiannon to see him, inside the body that he possesses. He wants him not to be afraid to show her love for him. But he knows that love can’t conquer anything at all. The people, who wants love to conquer all, should be the ones to conquer what love can’t. Love is just a word that it has no meaning if people are not in love. Same as love can’t conquer anything because it is just a word and the people should be the ones to overcome their fears. A wanted Rhiannon to know that they should both conquer their fears, because love cannot do anything so they should conquer it by themselves.

5.      “The past and future are what’s complicated. It’s the present that’s simple.” (Day 6033, Page 101)

-          A said this when he was in the body Alexander Lin, the boy that he wants to be. He said this because for him, at that time, the only important thing is the two of them. They pretended that they only known each other for that day so A focused only the past and he did not thought of the past or the complications of the future. He just thought of that day and no other thing.

-          Past is intangible and future is uncertain that they are complicated. We can do nothing to the both of them. But we have control of the present. Present is simple for we are living on it and it is new every day. We can still do what we want to do today even though we cannot change the past, we can still change the future. Present will eventually become our part and our future.

ð  This is the task that was assigned to me and I like what I have done for I know that I did my best in making it.

I can connect the story of Everyday by David Levithan to the social film developed by Intel and Toshiba, The Beauty Inside.

The two has a similar plot. In Everyday, the story is about an undefined being named A, who wakes up every morning in a new body. Whereas the film The Beauty Inside is about a guy named Alex who also wakes up every day with a different body.

A and Alex assimilate in a sense that they both have fallen in love with a girl. In their situation of having a different body every day, it is not possible to have a real connection to the people they met or encounter because eventually they will be gone. But in their case, they got attached to the girl and been thinking about that girl every day.

So basically, Everyday is very similar to The Beauty Inside. The two are both promoting gender equality to the public and showing that gender is not an issue here. In the film, The Beauty Inside, I like the way how the creators have come up with this idea of creating a film to catch the attention of the young-adults by including the concept of social media specifically Facebook. And so does the book Everyday which captures the readers with its unique plot.

ð  I like how she connected the story even if she did not connect it to her life. It is not necessary and I really like it.

Character Captain: Cahra Kincel E. Lipay

A: He is the protagonist in the story. He is a spirit since he was born. Everyday he possess different bodies. He stays in a body in just one day. No more extensions. He possess a person with the same age as him. Moreover, he cannot choose a body to possess. Sometimes, he possess a girl.

Compassionate
A is a compassionate spirit. The evidence is the love he has for Rhiannon . He loves Rhiannon so much. He does everything just to be with the girl. Though the situation is indeed very difficult. He takes the risk and  every oppurtunity just to be with Rhiannon the girl who means a lot to him.

Optimistic
A is optimistic for he hopes that he will be together with Rhiannon. That their relationship is possible. Though he knew that it is impossible for them to be together for he is a spirit and Rhiannon is a human. The circumstance will not allow them. But still A hopes that he can be with Rhiannon the girl who makes her happy.

Kind
A is a kind spirit. The evidence is in the last part of the story when the Reverend tells him how to possess a body for a lifetime. He decides to possess Alexander for he is an ideal guy and he has a good family and a almost perfect life. But he realizes that he must not do it. For he will deprive Alexander in living his life. Though it is A's chance to have a good and happy  life.

Rhiannon: She is the girl whom A is madly inlove. He is the former girlfriend of  Justine one ofvthe bodues A has possess. She is a type of girl who views love with the great influence of physical appearance.

Compassionate
She is compassionate towards Justine for he loves Justine regardless of the pain justine brings to her.

Fool
She is somehow fool because when she was still in a relationship with Justine she became a fool. For she disregards the coldness and the mistreatment of Justine towards her. She still love Justine and hopes that their relationships will still work.

Realistic
She is realistic. The evidence is when she tells A that their relationship is not possible because A is a spirit while she is a human.

ð  I guess the captain can do more. I think there are more adjectives that she can use to describe the characters and she could have added the minor too.

Artistic Adventurer: Merwilyn P. Bagatua

A is an Everyday

Every day is a mystery
Every day is an excitement
Every day is different
Every day is just an everyday!

A exists in different body
A moves from day to day
A exists in different ways
A is just wonderfully
created!

Different body everyday
but one thing is really,
A loves one girl only,
it is his Rhiannon dearly!

ð  I also find this poem funny but meaningful. It shows the life of A. I like it.

ð  The work of the enricher is a better than the last work. I like it.
Summarizer: Johanna Ariexia S. Quilinderino

A is an unclear being who wakes every day in another body. A is not male or female. For the purpose of the story and continuity, A is referred to as “he” throughout the novel. He is capable of thinking but he is not considered human nor demonic. A has his own memories but capable of tapping the memories and knowledge of the person’s body he is using. That means he is able to get through most days without arousing suspicion as to his presence. A doesn’t have any clue as to what’s going on with him. But what may it be, for him , it doesn’t matter. Every day he makes sure that he keeps or maintains a low profile so that it won’t affect the life of the person he inhabited.

He eludes himself from other people and avoids making real connections because he knows that tomorrow will be another life to live and another people to meet. He also feels inferior towards the word “tomorrow” for he knows that it will be a new everything for him. As time passes by he realized that people do not hop from one body to another so  he keeps a distance from the people around him in an effort to avoid the pain of losing them at the end of the day.

But when Rhiannon came, everything changed. Though in the story, A very well knows how Rhiannon loves and cares for her boyfriend Justin. Then one day, A connects with the body of Justin and got closed with Rhiannon and there, he established his feelings for her. But eventually, A confessed to her as to what really is going on. Rhiannon accepted everything but accepted the fact the she can’t truly have a normal relationship with A. Even though A goes from one body to another daily, it didn’t change his feelings towards Rhiannon. In fact, it grows more and more each day.

At the middle of the story, A has committed a mistake. There is this guy named Nathan who was inhabited by him. After the due time, A leaves Nathan’s body in the streets. Nathan woke up and had this feeling that for the past day he wasn’t in control of his body and he considered it as demonic possession. Unfortunately, A was unaware that he left his email on in Nathan’s computer so Nathan saw it and contacted A.

Realizing that he can’t give the relationship that Rhiannon deserves, A decided to do the best thing. A met a guy Alexander. He let the two meet and told Rhiannon to give Alexander the chance. Since he is a nice guy and A knows that she will be happy with him. The next day, A wakes in the body of a girl named Katie and plans to leave the area in order to fully break off contact with Rhiannon.

ð  I like the summary for it is long and it really tells the story.

Overall Comment:

I also like our performance in this last blog for we did it. Two blogs at the same time is not easy so I really appreciate all my group mates for a job really well done.

book 4

Paper Towns
by John Green

This novel is about Quentin, an average teenage boy, who searches for Margo, an adventurous girl, when she was missing. He thought she knew who Margo really is but during the search, he realizes that he have never known Margo. His life was centered on her that when she was gone, he discovered there are more things that matters, his friendship to Ben and Radar. This story conveys about friendship, adventure and how one can really see and know a person.

Discussion Leader: Chinny Grace G. Oraiz

1. In your opinion, do you think Margo chose the right decision on staying at Agloe? Why?

ð  Yes, it is a good decision because she just wants to be real not only to herself but also to the people around her. She does not want to be a paper girl anymore that leaving Jefferson Park is the only way to be real. And in the first place, she will not leave their town if she and her parents are in good terms. I and Sheila have the same thoughts regarding this while the others disagreed for they think that Margo became selfish.

2. If you were Margo, would you also leave Jefferson Park? Why?

ð  My answer is the same in the first question, I will leave Jefferson Park in order to find the real me but I will say my decision to my family and friends so they will not have to worry about me. Some again, disagreed to us.

3. Do you believe that Margo didn't want Q to come after her?

ð  Yes, I strongly believe that Margo did not want Q to follow her. First, it was explained in the novel and second, if she really wanted Q to come for her, she had left easier clues. Why make it difficult? Some said that Margo somehow wanted Q to follow her.

4. At the end part of the novel, Q thinks that he had been creating a fake image of Margo. Do you consider Margo as a Papergirl? Why?

ð  Margo was a paper girl because she acts what other people wants her to be. But she is not really a paper girl for she left Jefferson Park to be real. We all agreed that she is not a paper girl.

5. If you were Lacey, would you also come to find Margo? Why?

ð Yes I would certainly come for Margo for she is my best friend and I will prove to her that she had misjudged me. We all agreed that we will do the same.

Passage Picker: Maricris Santos
1. "Doing stuff never feels good as you hope it will." (Page 29, chapter 4)
If we are doing anything we are expecting the best outcome for it. But in reality what we are hoping for does not really happen, sometimes it comes least or better than we hope and expected it to be. So for me, we should be ready for the outcome of all the things we are doing. And we should things happily and enjoy every moment of it, because if you are enjoying it, you will be happy and content whatever the outcome would be.

2. "That’s always ridiculous to me, that people would want to be around someone because they're pretty. It's like picking your breakfast cereals based on color instead of taste." (Page 29, chapter 4)

I agree with Quentin when he said this line because we choose our friends or someone we want to be with not by their pretty face but by their attitudes. The face of the person is not important, what you will do with the pretty face if the attitude of that person is not as pretty as the face. It is also the attitude that we accept not the pretty face.

3. "...you gotta stop looking up at the sky, or one of these days you'll look back and see that you floated away, too." (Page 94, chapter 19)
For me, this passage means that we should not let the situations or problems take us away from our lives. We should not let the problems refrain us from doing the things we usually do. We should immediately face our problems and not let it stay in our lives for a long time. And we not should use these problems to quit but we should rather use it as a motivation to live our life in a better way and make us a better person.

4. "...the pleasure isn't in doing things; the pleasure is in planning it.” (Page 142, chapter 29)
Planning in doing things can give us more pleasure than actually doing it because in planning you can do what you want. And sometimes the things we planned do not really happened when put into action. We usually get overwhelmed when we plan that's why there are many things we want to do that we think we can accomplish, but some of us cannot really do it due to some circumstances.

5. "...the way you think about a person isn't the way they actually are." (Page 158, hour twelve)
I agree with this passage because sometimes we tend to believe and judge the person based on what is being shown to us or what we see. We cannot really judge the person if we don't know his real attitudes and the story behind his actions. Then if we totally knew him we will be surprise to discover new things about him and to know that he is a different person from what we believe and know.

ð  I like the passages that the picker picked. There are many passages in the book that I like. Some of the passages are not in here but I still like what she choose. I still like it especially the book. It is a job well done for the passage picker.

Connector: Johanna Ariexia S. Quilinderino

As I read the story it immediately popped in my mind that somehow Margo was my alter ego when it comes to her relationship with her parents. Though not as dramatic as her but there are some instances that I am becoming a “paper daughter” to my parents. I only show them what they wanted me to show them. And act like the daughter they wanted me to be. My parents are both teachers. So both spent most of their entire life educating those students they barely knew. However, I understand that being a teacher is actually a heavy duty to engage in. It means becoming the second parents to hundreds of kids yearly. So looking at the bright side, it means having hundreds of siblings but in line with this is the fact that there is a need for me to catch their attention.  But as far as I am concerned my parents mostly never fails to provide the things I needed physically and emotionally so despite of the lapses and missing pieces, as time passes by, I learned that no matter what the circumstance may be I know there is someone at my back ready to catch me if I fall and that is my parents.

ð  I like the connection of the connector. She really relates it to the story. She showed how she becomes a paper girl like Margo. But she is different to Margo for her family always supports and loves her.

Main Characters:

Quentin “Q” Jacobsen

Coward
He is coward because he is afraid of the unknown, of what will happen next. He is resistant to the things that are complicated and do not want to be involve to it. He does not like trouble for it leads to complications. Margo also said that ‘You’re a very anxious person, Q.’ (28) because he always avoided difficulties. Even when they were little, Margo was the brave one and he was the scaredy-cat. ‘As I took two steps back, Margo took equally small and quiet steps forward.’ (12) Margo also admitted that he made Q go to the abandoned mall so he can beat his fear.

Consistent
He is the type of boy who is steady. He just goes with the flow. He is a chill person for whatever he does, he is always relaxed. He is an average teenage boy who likes being consistent on everything that he does,‘I like the consistency.’ (166) He also likes boredom, ‘I never found boredom boring.’ (85) He is always late that he is unaffected of it, ‘I was late, but then again, I was always late.’ (58) He likes his routine every day. He likes going late to school, hating math subject, waiting outside the band room after their class then going home and playing Resurrection. ‘I liked routine.’ (22) He always does the things he always did,‘Such was that morning. Nothing really mattered that much, not the good things and not the bad ones. We were in the business of mutual amusement, and we were reasonably prosperous.’ (19) Whatever he does, he is always consistent. He wanted to know Margo more that he always tries to find her.

Selfish
He only thought of himself and not of his friends. When Margo was gone, he looked for him and he forgot about his friends. One day, when he was searching for Margo, Ben told him that he should come to the house of Radar for his family won the Guinness World Book for the most plenty collection of Black Santas. Q did not want to go that Ben told him that he knows that he is searching for Margo but they are there. They are not missing that he should also make time for them. He also said that ‘I’m asking you to come to a party with your two best friends who you have known for half of your life.’ (131) He wants Q to realize that Margo is missing but they are not. They are there and they need him. He just always thinks of Margo because she is important to him that he forgets his friends.

Margo Roth Spiegelman

Enigmatic
In their town, Margo is known to be a mysterious person. For Quentin she is mysterious for she has secrets and interests that he never knew she likes like music and poetry. For him, Margo loves mysteries that she turned out to be one. ‘Margo always loved mysteries. And everything that come afterward. I could never stop thinking that maybe she loved mysteries so much that she became one.’ (14)Then, she became more mysterious when she was gone. When she left Jefferson Park for nobody knows her reason why she did such thing is. Even her parents did not know why she left their town. She always leaves clues whenever she goes, like she left a Minnie Mouse in her bed when she went to Disney Land. ‘The clues. The stupid clues. But you can never follow them anywhere, trust me.’ (68) Because she loves clues, Q thought that he left some clue for him because she wants Q to follow him. But he was wrong.
For the people in Jefferson Park, she is mysterious because she always liked adventures and mysteries. ‘She’s somewhere by herself having the kind of fun we can only imagine.’ (62) But Q later realized that she is not mysterious. She is just a planner, ‘Margo as a planner.’ (140) and she loves planning ‘that’s the kind of thing she likes to imagine herself doing, the kind of thing she likes to plan.’ (145) She also said to Q that planning gives her the pleasure, not the adventure. ‘The pleasure isn’t in doing the thing; the pleasure is in planning it.’ (145)She is really not a mysterious person, she just loves planning.

Exceptional
She is different to the people leaving in Jefferson Park for they see her as a cool, hot chick who like mysteries. She is also popular at their school. She is always an exception to them for they thought she is doing what she wants to do in her life. She has also an exceptional beauty, ‘Margo’s beauty was a kind of sealed vessel of perfection –uncracked and uncrackable.’ (37) Especially for Quentin, she is exceptional,‘My miracle was this: out of all the houses in all the subdivisions in all of Florida, I ended up living next door to Margo Roth Spiegelman.’ (11) He always sees her awesome neighbor. ‘It wasn’t even that she was so pretty. She was just so awesome, and in literal sense.’ (17) Whenever she makes adventures, everyone likes and believes it,‘Margo Roth Spiegelman, whose stories of epic adventures would blow through school like a summer storm.’ (17) She also likes random capitalization. ‘Yeah. I’m a big believer in random capitalization. The rules of capitalization are son unfair to words in the middle.’ (27) She is different to the girls living in the Jefferson Park for she is gorgeous, cool and she is always being Margo. Her mannerism in random capitalization is so unique that it was the reason why Q found out that she was in Agloe.

Real
Margo said that she is a paper girl, living in a paper town. ‘I didn’t really look down and think about how everything was made of paper. I looked down and thought about how I was made of paper.’ (177) For her, she is a paper girl for she did what other people wants her to do. ‘Because it’s kind of great, being an idea that everybody likes. But I could never be the idea to myself, not all the way.’ (177) Everybody likes its idea that she also became one, ‘People love the idea of a paper girl. They always have. And the worst thing is that I loved it, too. I cultivated it, you know?’ (177) For Margo, Jefferson Park is a fake place for it was lived by fake people. That you can only see it’s fakeness if you looked at it closely. It is full of paper girls and boys.
‘Here’s what’s not beautiful about it: from here, you can’t see the rust or the cracked paint or whatever, but you can tell what the place really is. You see how fake it all is. It’s not even hard enough to be made out of plastic. It’s a paper town. I mean look at it, Q: look at all those cul-de-sacs, those streets that turn in on themselves, all the houses that were built to fall apart. All those paper people living in their paper houses, burning the future to stay warm. All the paper kids drinking beer some bum bought for them at the paper convenience store. Everyone demented with the mania of owning things. All the things paper-thin and paper-frail.And all the people, too. I’ve lived here for eighteen years and I have never once in my life come across anyone who cares about anything that matters.’ (41)
She left Jefferson Park and went to Agloe.‘A paper town for a paper girl.’(177)It is a real paper town where she can be real. ‘And Agloe is a place where a paper creation became real. A dot on the map became a real place, more real than the people who created the dot could ever have imagined. I thought maybe the paper cutout of a girl could start becoming real here also.’ (177) for her, Agloe is the only place where she can be real.
Everyone who knew Margo really thought they knew her, especially Q. ‘And maybe this was what I needed to do above all. I needed to discover what Margo was like when she wasn’t being Margo.’ (108) He realized that he really doesn’t know Margo. ‘I’d seen and mis-seen Margo.’ (109)During their search, he thought he finally understand Margo, ‘Not the Margo I had expected her to be. Not being the Margo I thought I had finally imagined to be.’ (172) but he was wrong. But in the end, he realized that the reason why he had not seen the real Margo is because he eliminated the fact that Margo is just a human. ‘Margo Roth Spiegelman was a person, too.’ (124)She feels pain, loneliness, anger and depression. That she feels what everybody feels. ‘Margo was not a miracle. She was not an adventurer. She was not a fine and precious thing. She was a girl.’ (124) Quentin realized that he saw the real Margo when he looked at his weaknesses. Margo was a paper girl but she proves that she is a real person when she left Jefferson Park and went to Agloe.

Minor Characters:

Ben Starling

Real
He is the reverse of Quentin. He is seeing what Q is missing. He always says what he wants to say. He can see what Q cannot. He always says what he wants to say. He understands that he is searching for Margo and but Ben wants Q to understand that they are there and Margo is not. He is real for he always says what he is feeling, not only intellectual but also emotional.

Merry
He always makes ridiculous jokes and he is the most cheerful person in their group. He is a jocular person. He is a positive person. He likes to joke around and make naughty comments. Because he is a cheerful person, he tends to have naughty jokes especially about his balls.

Selfless
He always makes decisions that he benefited not only him but also his friends. One of the situations that show this is when he saved the lives of Quentin, Radar and Lacey. He said that he did not planned to save them, he just saved himself. He keeps on insisting that reason but his friends know that he wanted to save them, not only himself.

Marcus “Radar”

Intelligent
He is good at computer and he is one of the editors at Omnictionary, a search page that is the same as a Wikipedia. He’s good at analysis and at computing. He always analyzesthe situation so he can find solutions. He uses his mind in making decisions and he always weigh things.
Honest
Radar says things that are needed to be heard, especially by Ben and Quentin. He is always fair on his judgment towards Ben and Quentin. He knows that they are dis-alike but he never chooses only one side. He explains to Q that there are things that he likes and dislikes about him also to Ben. He explains that he likes them for being them.
Reliable
Whenever Q needs him, he is always on the go. He is always there whenever a friend needs him. Even though he still has a hangover, because he drank do much after the prom, he still went to the house of Q when he asked if he could come. Whenever Q ask him if he could give advises, he always gives the most sensitive and the most needed answers.

Lacey

Loyal
In the first part of the story, Margo sent Lacey a fish because she thought she knew about the secret relationship of Rebecca and Jase. Lacey joined Quentin’s search for Margo so she can prove to Margo that what she thinks is incorrect.

Caring
She always cares to her love ones especially on Margo and Ben. She always cares for them. She also cares for Q when she asks if he is alright after the accident. She cares to the people around her.

Supportive
She always supports Ben whatever decisions he makes. And he supports Q when he finds Margo.

ð  This is my assigned task for this book. Honestly, I really don’t want to be a character captain but I as I made my task, I really love what I did. It is like knowing the characters more and knowing the deeper meaning of the story.

On Her Exit

Nobody knows
The mystery of your exit

It was sudden
And unexpected event

We still have an adventure
The night before your departure

Now I feel an absence
And I am missing your presence

So I looked for you
By tracing your clues

Then I found you
In the outskirts of Agloe

Oh! How good the destiny was
Because it reunited us.

ð  I find the poem funny because it is rhyme but it has a sense. But it is nice because it tells the how Quentin felt when Margo was gone. I like it.

1.      Felony-serious crime punishable by a heavy sentence. (p.23)
“I swear to God that you will not be asked to commit a felony.”

2.       Deign-condescend (p.36)
“God knows Lacey Pemberton would never deign to have me over.”

3.       Obfuscation- obscure (p.129)
“It was dishonest to act like Margo hadn’t participated in her own obfuscation.”

4.       Cacophonous-harsh or discordant sound (p.110)
“Maybe she had sat here in the cacophonous darkness.”

5.      Douche-disgusting person (p.113)
“You’re a douche.”

ð  I find this work very depressing. As a former vocabulary enricher, I did my best in making the words useful and its significance. The enricher in this book just copied the sentence in the book and made her definition. For me, it lacks some of its elements. But I really don’t blame the enricher for she said that she did not know what to do and it is not her fault that I’m expecting more from here.

Summarizer: Merwilyn P. Bagatua

The story began in Jefferson Park, a subdivision in Orlando, Florida. One day, the narrator, Quentin "Q" Jacobsen and his neighbor, Margo Roth Spiegelman were biking on the park. They discovered a corpse of a man named Robert Joyner, who committed suicide. The novel then flashed forward and they have grown apart. They are already high school students and have their own circle of friends. Margo has a boyfriend, named Jase. Q's friends are Radar and Ben. One night Margo showed up on his bedroom that was dressed like a ninja and convinced him to sneak out using his car to have revenge from those people who have hurt her.

These people are Jase, Becca and Lacey. Jase was cheating on her and the Becca is the girl he was cheating on Margo. As for Lacey, she felt that she's never been a good friend to her. They also visited Karin, who told her that Jase was cheating on her and leave her a bouquet of flowers. Q also has his revenge on the bully Chuck Parson. But before he get his revenge on Chuck, they have their rest first on Sun Trust Bank building. This was when she called their town a "paper town".

They returned home and on the next day at school, Margo didn't appear to school. After missing for three days, her parents filed a report. When Q learned about that, he noticed a poster of Woody Guthrie taped to the back of her shades. The poster led him to a song, Walt Whitman's Niece, which also led him to a book of poems, Walt Whitman Leaves of Grass. He believed that there are sections in the poem left by her which are clues to find her. He continued to search and find an address. He and his friends went there. It is an old mini-mall which has evidence that she's been there. There is also a spray- painted message on the wall.

The clues lead Q to believe that she's perhaps hiding out around Orlando. He went there but didn't find her. While getting ready for graduation, he discovered that she is hiding in a fictional town in New York called Agloe. Q, his friends and Lacey skip their graduation to go to New York to search for her. They found her living on the barn. But instead of being happy and grateful, she scolded them and told them that she doesn’t want to be found. Everybody, except Q got angry at her and went to a motel to spend their night. Q gets furious at her for wasting their time and for worrying her family. They talked things over and she decided to go to New York City. They kissed and bade their goodbyes.

ð  I like the summary for it is long and it really tells the story of paper towns. Good job to the summarizer.

Overall Comment:

I like our performance in this book for everybody made their task well. Even we have to do two blogs at the same time, everybody still made a good job.

book 3

Where She Went
by Gayle Forman

This book is the sequel of the novel “If I Stay”. This view point of this book is of Adam and he tells what happened to Mia after she stayed. The story begins three years after Adam and Mia separated. Adam is now in New York and Mia is in Julliard. They both have different lives now. There are many flashbacks about what happened to them the last three years. One day, when Mia had a concert in New York, she and Adam met. The novel really evolves in that one day. At that time, they realized that they still love each other and they went back to each other’s arm.

Discussion Leader: Cahra Kincel E. Lipay

1. If you were Mia, would you also blame Adam for making you stay? Why?

=> Partly yes because first and foremost, he is the reason why I decided to live. I was ready to die but because of him, I felt that I still had a reason to live. It is also my fault because I decided to stay. When I was in coma, I know this could happen but I just thought of the present and not of the future. But If I were in Mia's position, I should not blame anyone because I know that it is my choice to stay alive and it is my responsibility because I wanted to be alive. We all agreed that this is Mia' fault and Adam is just a reason why she stayed. It is still her decision to be alive.

2. If you were Adam, would you also deny that Mia was once your girlfriend? Why?

=> Yes. If I were Adam, I would also do that. It is not because I don't love her anymore but because I love her that I want to protect her. If denying that she was my girlfriend will protect her, then I would do it because that's my way of showing I care for her. I'm not just protecting myself but especially Mia because I know it might ruin her and better to avoid her. I don't want to see her suffering because of me. We all have different ways of showing that we care and love another person and for me, avoiding is my way of showing that I love her. Some of us agreed and some did not. I'm one of those who agreed for this is my way of protecting my love ones. Some said that they have a different way of protecting.

3. If you were Adam, would you also enter relationship just to move on? Why?

=> No. I won't go into a relationship because I know it would not work. If I were Adam and I know that I still love Mia, I would never go into a relationship just to forget her. It is unfair to side of the new girl that I will be courting if she will know that I don't really love her and I am just using her to move on. There are many ways to move on and I think it is not right to use other people. We also agreed that it is not right to go into another relationship just to move on.

4. What if Adam did not watch the concert of Mia, what do you think would happen?

=> If they are really for each other, I guess they will still see each other. If they are really meant to see each other, they will see each other how impossible the situation may be. But I guess this is the perfect time for them to see each other. They met there because it is the right time for them to be together again. Three years is enough to heal their hearts and to start over. We believe in destiny that we believe they will still see each other in different time.

5. Are you satisfied with the ending? Why?

=> Yes because they were together again. It is still a happy ending after all. If they were still separated until the last, I would be very disappointed. But I came to realized that it is not on how they are separated but on how they are able to survived the pain and be together again. It is not just about happy endings that the readers are satisfied, but on how the story went before it came to end. I guess the story is good that I like its ending, not just because they were back together but because of how Mia and Adam fought the challenges that made a happy ending for the both of them. Some said that they are not satisfied with the ending because it is a cliffhanger for them. Some said that it was good and I'm one of them.

Passage Picker - Merwilyn P. Bagatua

1. "Every morning I wake up and I tell myself this. It's just one day, one twenty-four hour period to get yourself through." (Chap.1, p.1)
This passage I think is true to life. Every day is a constant struggle. One day is technically made up of long twenty-four hours. Long enough when the person is in pain, miserable, solitude, sadness, or even when in boredom and missing someone. Just like me when I really feel so sad, I feel like a day very long.

=> I agree to this passage. Every morning we should get up and be ready for life because we are alive. It's brand new day that the Lord has given to us. When we face problems and it burdens us, we should be more thankful for we have the chance to solve it. There are also days that we don't want to get up because we are afraid that this day might come but if we don't get up, we cannot know what lies ahead of us.

2. "Basically, all the saints of the world: Men. The jerks, the players, the wet T-shirt contest afficionados? They were guys. Back then, I was a Man."(Chap.12, p.144)
Personally I just like this passage. It’s just funny how people can categorize other people too. According to Mia and Kim there are two kinds of men. Adam back then was a man but after three years, he becomes a guy which hurts him. And I also agree with it.

=> Adam said this because he was a man back then but now, he is a guy. The Adam before and the Adam now is different because they think differently. He was a man because he did what a man should do. Now, he is just a total jerk. He was a man because he was in love at that time and was loved but knows he's just the same as other boys who were left and felt unloved.

3. "Quitting's not hard. Deciding to quit is hard." (Chap. 16, p. 182)

This sounds like a motto to me. I really agree with this passage. Simply because it's true that to quit is easy. It's easy to say and just quit. When you quit, you stop, do away from a burden, give up, you feel relieve and the like. But to decide is a burden for you to think especially if that something that you're about to quit means a lot to you and  you will have a hard time to think and think to arrive at a conclusion which is to finally to decide whether you quit or not. Just like for Adam here, it is not easy for him to quit the band because it is his passion and music is almost his life. Then he must also think of others, what will be the effect of his quitting and what would happen to him if he finally decide to quit. And that's it, quitting is easy, just quit and so be it. But to decide requires so much thinking and weighing the effects of it.

=> I also agree to this phrase. It's so easy to quit. Just say you had enough then that's it. It's over. What is difficult is to decide whether to quit or to fight. The process of thinking that you want to quit is the hard part. You have to think of the effect and outcome if you quit and if you quit, it will still be hard for you to get over to it. If we feel that we want to quit, we should remember why we fought that long and what we are fighting for. Is it really right to give up and just quit? You are not just disappointing yourself but also other people that believe in you. You will never know the outcome if you quit.
4."You were so busy trying to be my savior that you left me all alone." (Chap. 16, p. 184)
Mia told this to Adam.

=> Personally, I love this phrase. I love this because this is what I always do. I am always trying to protect my love ones that I avoid them. I don't want them to get in trouble that I bring. It cause a lot of pain for them and also for me that I just carry the burden to myself. I don't want them to be involved that I think it is better that I handle our problems alone. It is not that I left them because I wanted to but it is because it is my way of protecting them. It’s also for their own sake. They just feel that they are left but it’s not true. I never left a friend; I just want to protect them. Sometimes, I feel that I’m the problem that I am avoiding them because I want to protect them from me. I don't want them to be hurt that I prefer to hurt myself. I don't want to see other people are suffering because of me that I want the burden to be carried just by me, alone.

5. "If we didn't entirely understand the other person's obsession, it didn't matter, because we understood our own." (Chap. 19, p.212)

This passage means that we really don't have to understand what other people do or their likes in their lives. What's important is we understand what we have. Just like in Adam and Mia, both are music lover while others aren't. So, they don't have to bother themselves understanding about them as long as they understand each other's obsession which binds them.

=> We should not judge about other people’s life because we have our own life to handle. We can't understand them sometimes but we should focus on our ourselves. We keep on judging other peoples flaws but we don't look on ours. We should first make sure that we understand our own lives, our purpose before we judge them.

After the terrible accident, Mia continues her life without her family in her side. Although it is very painful for her to continue life like an orphan she has endures it. Moreover, the love from her family which is missing in her life is supplemented by her relatives and friends.

I can connect my life with Mia's. However, I am more fortunate than her for it was only my mother who had passed away. On the other hand, Mia is already teenager when her parents and brother passed away while I am at a very young age when my mother died. And she is not as miserable like what I am experiencing sometimes. However, sometimes I also feel emptiness even though some members of my family are still here but it seems that something is lacking. Like Mia who is wondering what would be her life if she still has her family with her, I am also wondering what would be my life today if my mother is still alive. Would it be better than the life that I am taking now?

Sometimes I wish that my mother is still with me so that there is someone whom I can share as with my sentiments and problems which I cannot share with my present family today. For I think they will just tell me that I am over acting. I'm also missing her as Mia misses her family. Furthermore, Mia is still blessed for she has a relatives and friends who did not get tired of loving her. And I realized that like Mia I am also blessed for having relatives and friends whom I can feel the love that sometimes I did not feel from my very own family.

General View:
ð  I was shocked about the connection that the connector made. I did not expect that she will connect it to her mother. I guess she has done a good job. But I will just react over what she is feeling about her family. I guess she should not think that her family is like that or she is not fortunate because there are more unfortunate than her. I guess she should not be a pessimist about her family rather she should accept her situation. On whatever situation we have, especially to our family, we should always look to the bright side and be thankful. We don’t know that our problems are so minimal compared to the problems of others. We should be contented on our situation for God has a purpose why He did such a thing.

Character Captain: Johanna Ariexia S. Quilinderino

Adam Wilde – he is the narrator of the story. He was the boyfriend of Mia. He is the vocalist of a band named Shooting Star. He is currently living at New York.

STRONG - In the story “Where She Went” I find Adam as a strong character for he always finds ways to try to forget Mia. However, it is very evident in the story that he can never forget Mia and is impossible to get away with the things that they used to do. But the thought of him trying to get rid and to move on is already a manifestation that he is tough and strong. For all we know, forgetting someone who is very dear to us is an intolerable thing.

CARING – We can still feel in the story that Adam still cares for Mia especially when he found out that Mia is still alive. When a reporter went to him to ask about what is his relationship with Mia, he tried to avoid the issue. Instead he decided to keep it as a secret so that Mia won’t be connected with his life so that, Mia will be able to live her life peacefully.

HONEST – He is honest in a way that he admits to Mia that he is still in love with her. However, the honesty of him only was showed at the latter part of the story. Another honesty of Adam was also shown when he told Bryn the truth about Mia and about being in love with her. It was not an easy thing to do but he managed to the right thing so that at the end, no one will be hurt.

ð  For me, Adam has a strong character. He never stopped loving Mia but he chose to let her go because that was the right thing to do. He is also aggressive and easily-angered. After Mia and he separated, he became a different person. He totally changed. But for me, he is still the same Adam before Mia woke up. He is still caring and he still loves Mia very much. I also agree to the character captain on how he describes Adam.

Mia Hall –she was the girlfriend of Adam. She stayed and Adam was the one who told what happened to her after she stayed.

STRONG – She showed a different side of Mia where being strong was her only option. Waking up every day is really difficult especially thinking that you alone will be the one to face the day. Mia took the challenge of moving on even if it is so hard to accept the fact that she was left alone. Instead of giving up, she accepted the incident as an inspiration to move forward.

MARTYR- I consider her as a martyr for even though she still loves Adam, she avoided him to make everything okay. I believe that what Mia did was a constant reminder that no matter how you love someone, you still need to consider the things around you. Be sensitive enough to identify if what you really wanted is still appropriate.

FIGHTER – being strong comes with a fighter inside. That is what exactly Mia showed in the whole story. Obviously, she went through a lot of circumstances that made her a fighter.
ð  I agree on the character captain. She is strong for she fought the loneliness and pain after she stayed. Imagine, you are living a life with no more parents, you are alone. But Mia surpassed all this. I guess she and Adam is the same for they sacrifice their love for each other for they know it is the right thing to do. They are both martyr. She is also a fighter for she always fight and she never surrenders, whatever circumstances she might be in.

Brynshe is the new girlfriend of Adam but he doesn’t really love her.

WORRIED – Obviously, she’s not the typical girl who has her own lovable prince charming. But the fact that she has this boyfriend named Adam is not exactly the fulfillment of her fairytales. In the story, Bryn is completely worried about having this ghost rival towards Adam. Because even though they were together already, it cannot still justify that Adam loves her.

CONSTANT- she is very consistent from the very beginning till the end. She showed a normal character of a girl. Never tried to intrude between what’s going on to Adam and Mia.

FALMBOUYANT - in the story, she is the top-celebrity who will make every man head over heels for her.

General View:
Personally, I think the character captain can do more. What she passed is somewhat not enough, I guess. But I know she have done her best but I guess I’m still looking for some adjectives that really describes the characters. But it is still a good job for she has done her part.

Walk Away

It’s been three years since the accident
Wondering where in the world you went
Three years since you walked out of my life
I don’t know why, have we been in strife?

Missing you every day and every night
Looking for you my beautiful sunlight
It is just your hand that I want to touch
To tell you the words “I love you so much”

Every day, I’m waiting for your return
Every day, watching the time to turn
I guess that you don’t want me anymore
I set you free and you walked out the door

=> I like the poem very much for it describes what happened to Adam and Mia. I can feel the emotion.

Vocabulary Enricher: Angel May S. Bagaforo

Note: The meaning of the words comes from the English Dictionary. Each word has many meanings that I only put what is applicable to the scene.

1.    Unfurl  /ʌnˈfɝl/

“Letting go. Everyone talks about it like it’s the easiest thing. Unfurl your fingers one by one until your hand is open. But my hand has been clenched into a fist for three years now; it’s frozen shut.” [Adam] (Chapter 16, Page 196)

Verb
-          To unroll something that has been rolled.
Example:         She unfurled the sail when the boat started its engine.

-          It was used in the novel to describe letting go. This happened when Adam and Mia had a conversation before they separated. Mia told Adam that it was because of him why she stayed. Adam was between the decision to hold on or to let go. Adam chose to let go of Mia because at that time, it was the best thing to do.

-          In this paragraph, letting go is compared to a hand that is easy to open. You just have to unfurl your fingers. But Adam’s hand is tightened and it is now a fist. When your hands are clenched, it is difficult to open it. He is saying that it is hard for him to let go of Mia because he loves him so much. He does not want to let go of Mia but he has to.

2.    Annihilate /əˈnaɪə.leɪt/

“Hate me. Devastate me. Annihilate me. Re-create me. Re-create me. Won’t you, won’t you, won’t you re-create me.” [Adam] (Chapter 23, Page 266)

Verb
-          To destroy
Example:         Too much stress can annihilate one’s immune system.

-          It was used in the novel as the chorus of Collateral Damage. Adam made the song because of anger and pain that the separation has brought. He wanted the crowd to know that he is suffering and only Mia can change what he is feeling. But in the end, the meaning of the song changed. It is not an angry plea anymore but a new vow. It is now the new promise of their love for each other.

-          The chorus shows that in love you will be hurt and you will also hurt the one that you love. You will encounter circumstances that will make you sacrifice. It also shows that being destroyed is the only way to change. One can be repair, only when he is destroyed. Adam is now destroyed, after all the things that happened to them, that Mia can only fix him. After you suffered, you will be a better person.

3.    Nebulous /ˈnɛbjʊləs/

“The rest of the plan that’s formulating in my head –part of which already is solidified in some nebulous way last night on the bridge –I keep to myself, but I think Aldous senses it.” [Adam] (Chapter 21, Page 244-245)

Adjective
-          Vague or ill-defined
Example:         Success of course is very nebulous; sometimes failure is easier to spot than success!

-          It was used in the novel when Adam made excuses why he can’t go to London. He was with Mia that he wants to spend that day with her. He thinks that Aldous understands his decision not to go there. He has many things to do. Make music video and do interviews but at that time, he just wants to be with Mia.

-           He can’t think of clear reasons to excuse himself from the band but he is sure what he wants. He just wants to be with Mia and it’s all that matters. What he knows at that time is that he will not lose Mia again. Not this time.

4.    Murk /mɝk/

“I stare down at the water. A minute ago it was calm and glassy but now it’s like the river is opening up, churning, a violent whirlpool. It’s that vortex, threatening to swallow me whole. I’m going to drown in it, with nobody, nobody in the murk with me.” [Adam] (Chapter 16, Page 196)

Noun
-          Darkness or gloomy environment
Example:         There is murk in the center of the universe.

-          It was used in the novel to describe what Adam feels at that moment. This is when he and Mia are on the river and they are about to separate. Mia told Adam that he made her stay and he has faults on what happened to her after she stayed. Adam blamed Mia for ruining him but he realized that he was the one who ruined himself.

-          In this scene, Adam felt that he is alone. That no one understands and will understand him. He is in the darkness that no one will see and help him. This is when he decides that he should let go of Mia and that decision made him feel that he is now alone. Adam compared his feeling of loneliness to a whirlpool that will drown him and there will be no one to help him.

5.    Cathartic

“I meant it as a compliment. It was very cathartic for a lot of people, myself included. And that’s my point. Everyone knows something went down during your ‘black hole.’ It’s going to come out eventually, so why not control the message? Who does the ‘collateral damage’ refer to?” [Vanessa] (Chapter 1, page 22)

Adjective

-          Releases emotional tension, especially after an overwhelming experience
Example:         Sometimes, it is good to have cathartic things.

-          It was used in the novel to show how the song affected their fans. This happened during the interview of Vanessa, a reporter, to Adam about their album. Vanessa is asking Adam what happened to him why he made that song and for whom the song is intended to. She said that Collateral Damage is like the angriest album of the decade. Adam said that he did not make the song and it was made by his band mate.

-          The song releases emotions that the fans can feel. It is not just a song full of emotions but there is more to it. It is like the song was made because of anger and pain and it was based on the experience of Adam. Vanessa feels that Adam is the one who made the song and it was based on his personal experience. The song has anger that she thinks Adam maybe went to a relationship that he never wanted to end.

- this is the task that was assigned to me.for me, I did my best in making my past and I'm happy to its result.

Summarizer: Maricris G. Santos

It’s been three years since Mia woke up from the state of being coma. Adam and Mia departed and enjoy their lives separately. Mia continued her dreams at Julliard while Adam and his band went to New York.
They enjoyed the fame brought by their musical career. Adam narrated the events that happened during the past three years, what happened to him after their break up. He made a song about the pain that he felt when they broke up.
One day, on the concert of Mia, they met again, talked, reminisce their past then realized that they still love each other and were back on each other’s arms.
The story ended with the concert of Adam. While Adam was singing the song he composed, the thought of the song changed, it is not just about the pain anymore. He felt that their hearts beat as one

=> The summary is too short that I realized it really does not tell the story. But I still appreciate the work of the summarizer for she did her best.

Overall view:
I like our performance in this book because everyone made a great job. Everyone made their part and I'm happy to its result.
